Phil Mogg during the in 2017 - photo by

One week of reflection, since Phil Mogg announces his retirement from UFO on their 50th anniversary year, 2019. Its a tough decision to have to make but Phil leaves us with an amazing body of work which will continue to give us all immense pleasure and inspiration for future Rock bands. UFO have been a major influence during this time to so many. Below is a summary of Phil's work, which we hope will not end here, having sung on a staggering 279 songs (240 of which he is credited as writer) over this fifty year period.

UFO are well known as being the finest LIVE bands around and Phil has toured relentlessly over this time with an excess of 3,000 live performances. That’s equivalent to performing every day of the year, without a single days rest, for 8 years.

Phil Mogg has confirmed that next year’s 50th anniversary tour with UFO will be his last as the frontman of the long-running hard rock band. Consequently, it seems almost certain that at that point they will cease to exist. UFO were formed in London in 1969 and Mogg is their only ever-present member, performing on all of the group’s 22 studio albums.

“This decision has been a long time coming, I’ve considered stepping down at the end of UFO’s previous two tours,” Mogg explains. “I don’t want to call this a farewell tour as I hate that word, but next year’s gigs will represent my final tap-dancing appearances with the band.

“2019 marks UFO’s 50th anniversary, so the timing feels right,” he continues. “There will be a final tour of the UK and we will also play some shows in selected other cities that the band has a strong connection with. But outside of the UK this won’t be a long tour. Being out on the road isn’t always tremendously luxurious and although the playing is as great as it ever was, the stuff that surrounds it becomes very tiresome. I always told myself that when I reached that stage I would step down, and that’s what I’m going to do. This is the right time for me to quit.”

Mogg turned 70 back in April and although his voice remains strong, he admits that age played its part in his conclusion.

“I’m a big reader of obituaries, and my finger always goes down to: ‘I wonder how old they were…’,” he chuckles. “The last few years have been tough, losing Lemmy was awful and I was sad that Jimmy Bain passed on a cruise ship. That distressed me quite a lot.”

While many veteran bands in such a position simply cease playing live and continue to record, UFO will no longer be releasing new music. Last year’s covers collection ‘The Salentino Cuts’ is set to become a signing-off point, though Mogg insists that however unlikely the prospect might seem – the singer is a lone strand of consistency throughout a 50-year history – he would have no problem with UFO continuing with a replacement.

The band’s current line-up – completed by keyboard player/second guitarist Paul Raymond, guitarist Vinnie Moore, drummer Andy Parker and bassist Rob De Luca – have of course been informed of Mogg’s decision.

“I’ve told the guys that this is how it is,” he says. “They know it’s my time to go and they know that they can do whatever they want to do without me but I don’t want to play live or make records anymore, though having said that I might go on and do an album of my own. I’ll have to see how I feel about that.”

Of course UFO have either split up, retired or gone on hiatus several times before but Mogg is keen to make the distinction that next year’s dates don’t just mark the end of his touring commitments with UFO – for Phil, there will be no further concerts of any kind.

“For me, this is the end of my stint with UFO,” he clarifies. “This is a line in the sand. I’m suggesting we call the tour ‘Last Orders’, though I also like ‘The Bar Is Closing’. I’m also tempted to name it ‘The Drinks Are On Parker’,” he chuckles, referring to long-suffering sticksman Andy Parker.

You’ll have gathered that Mogg is not about to slash his wrists anytime soon. Of course he is sad that the finishing line is now within sight but has had sufficient time to live with and process such a massive personal decision.

“Maybe the best word to use is ‘bittersweet’,” he concludes. “But my time has arrived and all that remains is to make sure that we have a good tour.”

UFO BASSIST ROB DE LUCA ON MAKING THE SALENTINO CUTS COVERS ALBUM

“IT’S A DIFFERENT MINDSET THAN WRITING A RECORD… IT WAS A BLAST”;

Metal Wani's Chuck Marshall had a chat with UFO's Rob De Luca at The Machine Shop, Flint, MI. The latest release from UFO is called ‘Salentino Cuts’ and contains 12 amazing covers of songs such as “River of Deceit” by Mad Season and “Too Rolling Stone” by Robin Trower.

We asked Rob what led to UFO recording an album of covers. We also delved into what the selection process was like and what were some of Rob’s favorite cuts from the new album. Given that the tour with Saxon is just over halfway complete, we were interested in hearing how Rob thought the tour was going. He mentions that there are no egos with this tour and that everyone is very supportive and having a great time bringing the music to the fans. We wanted to know how UFO was able to team up with Saxon to bring two legendary and influential bands together on a single tour.

Rob mentioned that it doesn’t hurt for both bands to have the same booking agent. Their agent suggested the tour with Saxon and Jared James and it has worked out great. With nearly 50 years of music to select, we imagined that the process to select music for the setlist is tough. Rob mentioned that they try to span the catalog and much of the selection process rests with lead vocalist and founder of the band, Phil Mogg.

Rob is coming up on his ten year anniversary with UFO. We wanted to know if the spark he felt when he joined was the same today. Rob elaborated that if anything, things are easier for him since he started and how fortunate he feels to be making music for a living.

Finally, we talked a bit about Rob’s first band, the highly underrated Spread Eagle. This band came out in the early 90’s and release music that is on par or better than Skid Row or L.A. Guns. Rob shared his thoughts on the band’s recent shows in Europe including a stop at the Hair Metal Heaven festival in Hull, UK. There are plans to release new music from Spread Eagle in 2018.

NEW BOOK

Matt Herring has written a book titled,
UFO - Your favorite bands favourite band!

Within the ranks of hard rock and heavy metal, UFO are one of the most influential bands of all time. Sadly... they are most criminally neglected band that ever put music to vinyl, or cassette, or cd or even 8 Track!

In UFO - YOUR FAVORITE BAND'S FAVORITE BAND, writer Matt (Matman) Herring chronicles the entire recording history of UFO; from the odd UFO 1 to the quite good,  A CONSPIRACY OF STARS. Within the pages, Matman reviews every album and every song in hope that you will rekindle a lost love or discover for the first time, some of the best music ever recorded.

Also included are the stories surrounding each album as well as reviews of albums by Michael Schenker Group, Waysted, Whitesnake, Scorpions and other bands or artists that have lineage to UFO.

No book about UFO would be complete without the comments of those musicians that were influenced by UFO including Dave Meniketti (Y&T), Michael Sweet (Stryper), Jimi Bell and B.J. Zampa (House Of Lords), Uli Jon Roth (Scorpions, Electric Sun), Steve Brown (Trixter) and Tracy G (Dio).

The book is introduced by UFO fan, Michael Sweet of Stryper, the front cover is done by the amazing Andrew Edge and back cover photograph is by Rebekah Herring

UFO - YOUR FAVORITE BAND'S FAVORITE BAND is a full color 168 collection of memories and music and is available on Amazon.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Unfortunately a lot of photographs have been removed from this website due to copyright laws.

I have always tried, whenever possible to credit the photographer by placing a watermark on the photo and adding a copyright line below that photo with a live link back to the relevant photographers/authors website or facebook page. According to copyright laws this is not sufficient and requires a written note from the photographer via e-mail or message to me in person, Tristan Greatrex. It isn't sufficient to post a photo and then, when asked to remove it, removal then takes place. Zero tolerance seems to be the line with copyright issues.

There are now legitamate companies contacting various people and websites on behalf of their clients, charging over ,000 per single photo if such written permission wasn't given. This website always strives to recognise the works of creatives, wherther its musical, design or visual so supports copyright laws but this has to be done to the letter of the law.

One option was to shut down this website for fear of prosecution but there has been so much time and effort devoted to UFO and its fans, spanning their long career that an alternative had to be found. This alternative was to remove all photo's and articles. This UFO fansite is a non-commercial use for the purpose of providing commentary and support for a band we all love. All photo's were posted in a 'fair use' mindset but is still more than possible for a fan site or community to infringe upon the copyright of the work they are promoting.

This announcement is for everyone who has supported this UFO, Misty Green and Blue website and to the following photographers who have always sent me photo's with their blessing and permission to post, so that we can all enjoy the News, Live concerts and Interviews no matter where we are in the world, whilst the band perform in another part of the world, so that we may enjoy the experience.

There will be photographers names that I have missed off due this announcement being hurried, please , so that I may locate and re-post the photo's

CURRENT PLANS

Over time I will try to re-pot as many photo's, articles and web pages as possible. This will take months and years as It will involve tracking down and asking for written permission from the photographers, media sites and authors.

FUTURE PLANS On-going additions to this UFO, Misty Green and Blue website will only occur once I have contacted the author (photographer, writer, media publisher) and receive written authorisation to post. This means that the website will not be so 'immediate' and this process takes time. Hopefully we can stillcollectively enjoy this UFO website.
HELP If anyone takes live photo's of any concert, writes a review or scans any memoribelia, can you send this directly to me, , with note saying that you own the media and give your consent for this to be published on this UFO, Misty Green and Blue website - I thank you all in advance - Tristan

REVIEW 3: UFO - The Salentino Cuts

REVIEW snippets: ...Alongside mainstay and vocalist Phil Mogg are long time drummer Andy Parker and keyboard player/guitarist Paul Raymond, guitarist Vinnie Moore (who joined in 2003) and bassist Rob De Luca (since 2012). This album also gives a good nod to some of the band’s roots.

The album opens up with the Yardbirds’ ‘Heartful Of Soul’; Mogg’s vocals are still slick, solid, powerful, more than making up any (minor) loss of range. This song sounds just wonderful by UFO.

‘Break On Through (To The Other Side)’ is a solid cover, but I was never a Doors fan. The rich keyboards are appropriately turned up in the mix here, adding to the authenticity. Like the song or not, Mogg has the swagger...

...‘Honey-Bee’ is a good solid deep number that has a dark edge, Mogg and crew do a fine job here.  ‘Too Rolling Stoned’ – now we’re talking! A classic Robin Trower track that totally rocks and UFO do total justice too. The funky edge to Moore’s guitar fits perfectly.  Likewise with the blues of ZZ Top’s ‘Just Got Paid’.  Love it beginning to end.

The album closes with ‘It’s My Life’, which sees the whole band shine...

4/5 STARS

REVIEW: UFO - The Salentino Cuts

by Kevin Wierzbicki

Last year Cleopatra Records issued Live Sightings, a 4-CD box set containing four UFO concert recordings from the early 1980s along with a vinyl copy of 1972's Early Flight, and that material painted a pretty good picture of what the band was all about for their first dozen or so years. The beloved British rockers have covered lots of ground since then; UFO is now only about a year and a half away from celebrating their 50th anniversary, and The Salentino Cuts illuminates a side of the group that's never been shown before.
The guys --- vocalist Phil Mogg, guitarist Vinnie Moore, drummer Andy Parker, keys man Paul Raymond and bassist Rob De Luca --- have chosen a dozen cuts by other artists to cover here, and while some of the songs or their original performers may be UFO influences, the set is better thought of as just a bunch of the band's favorite cuts. The program is bookended by two cuts from 1965 as the album opens with the psychedelic blues rock of the Yardbirds' "Heart Full of Soul" and wraps up with the hardscrabble tale that is "It's My Life," originally a hit for the Animals. In between are songs you might expect, like the cowbell-rocking "Mississippi Queen," a hot take on ZZ Top's "Just Got Paid" where Moore romps on slide guitar, and an extra bluesy version of Montrose's "Rock Candy." There are cuts too that you wouldn't think UFO would cover in a million years, but that turn out sounding awesome, like a take on the Steppenwolf chestnut "The Pusher," an impressive interpretation of Mad Season's "River of Deceit," an appropriately slow and smoky groove for Bill Withers' noir hit "Ain't No Sunshine" and another guitar showcase for Moore on Tom Petty's (yes, stinging) blues cut "Honey Bee."...

3rd August 2017

There seems to be an explosion of Press Releases

UK's have been playing UFO songs on their radio station, as well as posting

So what do we know?

The new album is titled 'The Salentino Cuts'

Release date: September 29th 2017

Label:

Available on both CD & 2 limited vinyl pressings, one splatter vinyl and one white vinyl!

Artwork: Tristan Greatrex

Track Listing:

1. Heartful Of Soul (The Yardbirds)
2. Break On Through (The Doors)
3. River Of Deceit (Mad Season)

The album will definately have the bands stamp all over it with Phils distinctive vocals and phrasing
Vinnies guitar work (listen to ZZ Top's La Grange from his solo album, Aerial Visions), Pauls dreamy keys,
Andy Parkers thunderous drums and delicate percussion and Rob De Luca's thumping bass lines.

Vinnie Moore said, “Making this covers record was a blast for me. I thoroughly enjoyed putting a little of my own spin on these tunes that I grew up with. I played ZZ TOP and Robin Trower songs about a gazzilion times onstage over the years. it was great to actually get to record some of my old faves.” - source:

For those who may not be aware, Gus G. has spent the past decade affirming his status as one of metal’s reigning guitar virtuosos. Personally handpicked by Ozzy Osbourne in August 2009, he served as the heavy metal legend’s lead guitarist through spring 2017, while also establishing himself as an acclaimed solo artist with more than a dozen studio albums to his credit. Concert review - Gas Monkey Live!

As expected, UFO went out and played just enough newer material to consider the tour an extension of the latest album (2015’s great “A Conspiracy of Stars”) and not a greatest hits show. Deep down, the band knew the phenomenon the fans were obsessed with – and though UFO didn’t force it, the show was lights out...

10/10 concert review

UFO/Saxon – BB King’s Blues Club & Grill, NYC, New York

Wednesday, March 29th 2017

After their stellar performance, I would not want to follow Saxon but UFO had the capacity to do so. As I mentioned early, this was my first live introduction to this band. I love their music but it is all about how songs translate live and how a band commands the stage. I had no doubt that UFO would delivery and that they did.

Phil Mogg and Andy Parker were the remaining original UFO members.  The band has had a revolving door of major talent including Billy Sheehan, John Norum, Michael Schenker and a plethora of others. Tonight, Mogg and Parker were joined by guitarist Vinne Moore, New York bassist, Rob De Luca and keyboardist, Paul Raymond who joined the band in 1976...

...The set ended with ‘Rock Bottom’ from ‘Phenomenon’; after the usual brief pause, the band returned to the stage for their encore numbers. ‘Cherry’, ‘Doctor Doctor’ and ‘Shoot Shoot’ were tonight’s mystery choices. This was a good set list and a brilliant performance.

Bands come and go throughout our lives; but there is something said for staying power of raw talent, well written songs and mastering your instrument of choice. The blood, sweat and tears that go into recording, touring and performing translates to artists that remain timeless. This is not something that all musicians achieve but those that do are well rewarded by dedicated fans.

These two rock pioneers still have that x factor; they have solid songs; they rule their stage and appreciate their fans. This is why I chose to write about these shows; I, too, am a rock fan who understands just what I am witnessing. As long as these bands are still out there doing what they do, we will all be along for the ride.

Heavy Meal Mania: A Feeling Like No Other

Scout Bar - Houston

They start off the set with the 1981 ballad "Long Gone", a good choice for a concert of this magnitude. UFO proves they are also brave in their set selection with a song off their 2012 album Seven Deadly with the song "Wonderland". They take us all the way back to 2015 with "Run Boy Run", showing that they choose to play their new songs early and get them out of the way rather than spreading them in between their more known material. The band continued with their classic "Lights Out", a song that truly demonstrates the vocal ability of Phil Mogg, one of my favorite vocalists. The color blue illuminates the venue and the band plays their 2004 ballad "Baby Blue". The band returns to rock form with "Ain't No Baby"....

Hard Rock Corner: Saxon and UFO

Live at Penn’s Peak, Jim Thorpe, PA, 1st April /17

When it was near time for UFO's grand entrance, the crowd was abuzz with the fact that famed radio personality and host of That Metal Show Eddie Trunk was in the house. As Trunk emerged from backstage, waving and giving thumbs' up to shout outs from the audience, things were revving to fevered pitch. The crowd packed forward in anticipation, the pungent stench of gasoline and denim reeking, with no room for escape...

REVIEW and PHOTOS:

UFO, who formed in the late 1960s and has been a presence in popular music one way or another since that time, took to the stage as the headliner of this tour. Lead vocalist

Phil Mogg impressed with a shiny chrome dome and the veneer of a Harry Potter villain, swung the mic stand around like his own magical wand. His swagger to and fro was a unique counterbalance to the swirl of constantly-changing stage lighting.

The band started the night with “Mother Mary” and “Run Boy Run” and then took us through mid-set offerings like “Too Hot to Handle,” “Messiah of Love” and “Burn Your House Down” before ending the show with a three-tune encore including “Doctor Doctor” and “Shoot Shoot.”

I guess they have a thing for titles that echo... READ

The  conducted an interview with SAXON frontman Biff Byford prior to the band's March 16 show at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, California where they were the support act for UFO. UFO related excerpts, transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET:

On the band's current United States tour with UFO:

Biff: "It's great, really. It's a good package. We love UFO and loved UFO for years. UFO are basically a '70s band and we're an '80s band so the two styles fit together really well. If you listen to UFO, you listen to us. It's where we started from that period."

On whether playing with UFO brings out the best in SAXON:

Biff: "Yeah, I think it does. Obviously, we don't have too long to play like we when we're headlining or closing the show. You have to compact it all in the period you have. We're playing for an hour and ten minutes, which is not bad. Our usual show is an hour forty-five, two hours, so you have to compact it in and I can't talk too much to the audience. [Laughs] It keeps us on the edge, I'm telling you. To go out in the middle, it's a nice spot to be in, in the middle of the show. It's great because everything is rushy-rushy. [You're] onstage, offstage. It just keeps you on your toes, really."

On Saturday April 1, 2017, the only fools were the ones who did not get a ticket to the UFO-Saxon concert at Penn’s Peak in Jim Thorpe, PA. Close to 2000 fans, mainly middle-aged men clad in leather and denim jackets donned with classic rock and roll patches, attended the sold out rock show at the scenic concert venue in the heart of central Pennsylvania near the Pocono Mountains. The Penn’s Peak show was the second to last on this classic US tour before heading to Europe to begin the summer festival season. Both Saxon and UFO have storied careers spanning decades with a diehard and loyal fanbase. - ©2017 NYS Music

Eddie Trunk and the Phil Mogg interview on Thursday before UFO's second night appearance at BB Kings New York -

"Huge thanks to Phil Mogg UFO for joining me this afternoon on TrunkNation! It was his only interview on the US tour and he said it will likely be his last (which we bet on!). Hear it again tonight 9P ET  106. Also thanks to  for coming in. Off to  NYC soon to host night number 2!"
- Eddie Trunk

Eddie Trunk and Phil Mogg in the Studio

"Had an great couple nights at BB Kings hosting UFO, Saxon and Jared James Nichols to sold out crowds. All the bands sounded great and Jared is one to watch for sure. Everyone knows how special UFO are to me and they were sooo good! Everyone played amazingly well and Phil sang so great. Slightly different sets each night too. Thursday they opened with two Chapman songs in a row! Thanks to Eddoe Oertell and all the guys in UFO for the hospitality and tolerating my fan boy geekness! And special thanks to Phil Mogg for doing my radio show. Phil doesn’t love interviews but did his only one of the tour on TrunkNation, and he says his only US one for the next 18 months (he bet me haha). Two more sold out shows on this tour and then hopefully they are back soon. It was a great tour and package with these three bands" - ET. -

CONCERT REVIEW
Saxon, UFO storm Cleveland with Jared James Nichols

British space rockers UFO landed at House of Blues Cleveland last Tuesday (March 28) at the top of a double-header doozy pairing the quintet with English metal mavens Saxon.

Still fronted by boxer-turned-singer Phil Mogg (the group’s sole constant member), the influential (Metallica, Testament, Def Leppard) London-spawned outfit also features long-time drummer Andy Parker Paul and keyboardist/guitarist Paul Raymond (both on board since the ‘70s), lead guitar sensation Vinnie Moore (joined 2003), and bassist Rob De Luca (since 2008).

Formed in the late ‘60s, UFO excelled at blending the hard rock of Black Sabbath and Cream with the psychedelia of Pink Floyd and classicism of the Moody Blues and Yes into a unique, muscular mix.

A lot has changed over the years for Mogg and company—gone are the cheeky anthems of Force It (1975) and No Heavy Petting (1976)—but the elder statesmen of art rock still perform with the energy and enthusiasm of over-adrenalized teenagers. Unwilling to trade entirely on the past, the UFOers continue to make compelling records and tour fresh tunes well into its 50th year: They played “Run Boy Run” and “Messiah of Love” from 2015’s A Conspiracy of Stars for Cleveland—and revisited “Burn Your House Down” from 2012’s Seven Deadly CD.

But breakthrough UFO album Phenomenon (1974) and fan favorites Lights Out (1977) and Obsession (1978) received the most attention, with Mogg and the gang tearing through “Baby Blue,” “Only You Can Rock Me,” and “Too Hot To Handle” with youthful abandon.

Mogg juggled his mic stand and prowled the HOB as if looking to pick a fight, but engaged the audience with gentlemanly rapport. DeLuca thrummed a Gibson Thunderbird bass, his long hair flailing to Parker’s brutal beats.  Moore—borne of the same ‘80s “shredder” movement—was dazzling on guitar, his fingers flaying and tapping the strings. Raymond layered the sound with lush keyboard chords and catchy, mischievous riffs.

Late-set goodies included “Love to Love” and “Rock Bottom.” The encore squeezed “Cherry, “Doctor Doctor” and “Shoot Shoot” into a single-bang bang bonanza.  - By:

UFO Land's in Times Square with Saxon

UFO And SAXON In Cleveland, OH With Photos!

By Geoff Ketler, Cleveland Contributor

Supporting their 21st studio release, A Conspiracy of Stars, British metal pioneers UFO made their way to the stage after their tour manager’s introduction. Vocalist Phil Mogg greeted the crowd and said “Okay…"Mother Mary"” and away we went. Vinnie Moore - the longest tenured UFOguitarist, absolutely mesmerized. He’s a freak…I don’t know what else to say. His sizzling, effortless playing really drives the live show. Phil Mogg is quite charming; telling jokes and speaking to individual members of the audience and he still has the pipes. Phil interjected “Lights out in Cleveland” during the song “Lights Out” which took the fans all the way to 11.

The entire set encompassed hit after hit with a handful of the new material just to garnish. Set staples like “Let It Roll”, “Too Hot To Handle” and “Rock Bottom” were all executed flawlessly. What a night – two legends sharing the same stage and proving not only their relevancy, but their supremacy.

Concert Review + Photos - Cleveland

UFO / SAXON – BRITISH THUNDER & LIGHTNING ROCKS CLEVELAND!

Saxon alone was worth the price of admission, but UFO was the cherry on top and it makes sense. Saxon is like the steak with bruising, loud and in-your-face metal while UFO is the dessert, they’re sweeter, more accessible, but still packs a punch. Guitarist Vinnie Moore was the star of the show, being the youngest member of the band and replicating those Michael Schenker licks to a T. Vocalist Phil Mogg was in a dress shirt and was very gentlemanly throughout the night. UFO kept things mostly seated in the ‘70s except for a couple of the latest A Conspiracy Of Stars (“Run Boy Run”, “Messiah Of Love”). Of course you have to hear the lit up “Lights Out” (third in the set which was a surprise!), “Let It Roll”, and the uber-catchy “Only You Can Rock Me”. If you don’t like “Rock Bottom” then you just don’t like rock ‘n’ roll. One of the finest riffs to ever come out of rock and the Vinnie showcased his chops on the long jam. The encore featured “Cherry”, the blood-pumping “Doctor Doctor” and an elongated “Shoot Shoot”. Only a few dates left in the jaunt; don’t miss it! -

Concert Review and photo's - City National Grove of Anaheim

Jared James Nichols, along with the British invasion of Saxon and UFO, took control of the sold-out crowd on Saturday March 18th at the City National Grove of Anaheim.

Headliners UFO took the stage at 10:15 for a ninety-minute set, touring in support of their 2015 studio album A Conspiracy of Stars. I’ll admit it’s been a while since I have listened to UFO. I was surprised how many songs I knew. Opening their set with Long Gone off The Wild, the Willing and the Innocent, my first impression this was going to be a long set, starting off a little slow. That quickly changed as frontman Phil Mogg and drummer Andy Parker (the only two original UFO members) along with keyboardist/rhythm guitarist Paul Raymond, guitarist Vinnie Moore and bassist Rob De Luca, found their rhythm for Run Boy Run off A Conspiracy of Stars, rounding out the first three songs with the self-titled track Lights Out. Mogg, a veteran of working the crowd, kept the fans attention with his humor in-between songs. At sixty-eight years young he does his fair share of working the stage, whipping that mic stand around like it’s nothing, delivering the classic UFO sound...

USA FO/SAXON LIVE REVIEW AND PHOTOS

Almost Too Hot To Handle: UFO & Saxon In Denver, CO At The Summit Music Hall On 21 Mar 2017

NWOBHM was very much alive in Denver the other night.  and , two of the leading bands of the movement, took the audience on a trip down memory lane and it was spectacular.
It can be hit or miss when some 'dinosaurs' of heavy metal come to play in Denver and one never knows if the gig is gonna tank. But as soon as I approached the venue, I knew the night would turn out great since it was still about an hour before doors and the fans already lined up alongside the building.
If not for the band shirts, leather and denim jackets, a casual observer could have mistaken this for an AARP meeting.   But all kidding aside, while the venue was not packed to capacity, it was full nevertheless. The upper section of the Summit Music Hall was reserved for those who purchased a VIP ticket (at almost double the price of a regular one) and I guesstimate that around 50 or so die-hard fans splurged for the opportunity to watch the bands from a higher advantage point.

UFO took the stage a bit behind schedule and I was wondering how they could top what we have just witnessed. In fairness, while Saxon is all about the heavy metal, fast and furious riffing, UFO toned it down with the more hard rock approach. Due to the somewhat legendary status of UFO who is widely credited for bridging the gap between hard rock and heavy metal in their early days, the heat was definitely on for the band.
Vocalist Phil Mogg took command early on and made sure that no stone was unturned when it came to belching out those great UFO tunes. To be honest, he hasn't lost his vocal range at all over the years and sounded just as fresh as decades ago.

Seventies hit songs such as "Lights Out", "Too Hot To Handle", "Only You Can Rock Me" and of course "Doctor Doctor" were the reason most of us were there and UFO didn't disappoint AT ALL. And while the crowd was overall older, there were still tons of 'young'ens' in the audience; especially right up the rail. Guitarist Vinnie Moore interacted with the younger fans quite often which was really nice to see.
"Run Boy Run" and "Messiah Of Love" were the only two songs from their 2015 release A Conspiracy Of Stars being heard that night (to the best of my recollection), but I bet nobody in the audience minded since it was great to hear 30-plus year old songs come to life on stage. And speaking of 'old'… at one point I was standing outside to catch some fresh air and engaged in a conversation with an older gentleman sporting a vintage UFO shirt. He told me that he hadn't been at a concert in years and actually found out about the show because his grandson follows the venue on Facebook.
I bet he had a great time and it also was a great night for both 'dinosaur' bands and their performances proved once again that (old-school) rock and metal will never die.

To answer a common question, from UFO fans...

..rather than answer you all via e-mail, lots of new photo's from various venues are being added to the tour page throughout the day. As I am based in England, updates and news come through to me late evening and early morning, UK time, so there is always a time-zone delay.

This page is updated just once as a 'daily date entry'. Every addition to the tour page will not be announced here, so its a question of browsing/exploring the current tour page, click the'USA UFO spring tour link below.

The UFO/SAXON headline tour is going really well with lots of feedback from both fans who are enjoying both influential and great bands. Most feedback is that they should be appearing in larger venues but fans seem to be enjoying the intimacy of the venues. Wish I could be there with you. Tristan

CONCERT REVIEW

UFO/Saxon At The Scout Bar Houston TX 3-9-2017

After what seemed to be a fairly prolonged unfortunate series of technical difficulties, headliner  UFO finally stormed their stage at approximately 10:15 pm. The band is touring to promote their newest album A Conspiracy Of Stars as well as deliver their much beloved classics.  An eagerly awaiting sea of the British band’s fans were served up “Long Gone” to kick off the set.

Frontman and original member Phil Mogg still has the energy and power to deliver the vocal goods as well as a sense of humor during his audience interactions.

Simultaneously rocking both the keyboard and delivering his recognizable left handed guitar style, Paul Raymond made a few very brief appearances from behind the keyboard much to the audience’s delight. Vinnie Moore’s diabolic guitar wizardry screamed and ripped while bassist Rob De Luca’s smooth bottomless baritone  thrums throughout. On drums, original member Andy Parker’s infectious beat kept the entire band on point...

It seems that we continue losing such wonderful people who's passion for the music that we all love, helped us all enjoy so many wonderful times. UFO loved playing this venue and Bryn Lewis, founder of The Brrok venue in Southampton - RIP BRYN LEWIS

This posted on the :

11th February 2017
It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Bryn Lewis, founder and creator of The Brook, died yesterday following a short illness.
As an established licensee in Southampton and following on from managing several successful pubs in the city, Bryn acquired The Brook in 1995 and transformed the original pub into the two tier music venue we know and love. He had a simple aim: to create a venue where people could have fun and enjoy live entertainment. Bryn conceived and generated a unique ethos and culture that will continue to live on and from which many, many people have, and will continue to, derive a lot of pleasure.
His long time friend and business partner Dylan will continue to manage The Brook with the new addition of Bryn's eldest son, Nick, to build upon and continue his father's legacy.
The Brook family, our customers, artists and their management will miss him tremendously and send their most sincere condolences and best wishes to Bryn's family."
